20 Years of Fuchsia Lane · 2006–2026
Presented from April to July 2026, *The Poetry of Form* marked Fuchsia Lane’s 20th anniversary with a retrospective tracing two decades of our exploration and development of *Nanyang fashion*.
Through selected works, archival pieces and design stories, the exhibition explored how Southeast Asia’s diverse cultural influences can find contemporary expression through fashion.
Over three months, we were privileged to welcome *leaders, decision-makers and practitioners across culture, education, fashion, design, business and social impact*, alongside VIP clients and friends who have supported Fuchsia Lane throughout our journey. Their diverse perspectives contributed to the continuing conversation on what Nanyang fashion is — and what it can become.
Just as meaningful was sharing our *craft innovations, traditional crafts and cultural stories with families and their children*. Perhaps an encounter like this can spark a child’s curiosity today — and be a first step towards nurturing the creatives of tomorrow.
The exhibition has concluded, but the conversation continues through the Nanyang Fashion Gallery.

A Design Language Rooted In Nanyang

Our work begins with understanding the cultures, histories and ways of life that have shaped Nanyang. Across two decades, we have drawn from traditional craft, architecture, art, dress, popular culture and cross-cultural encounters — researching, reinterpreting and sometimes re-engineering them through contemporary design.
The result is not simply clothing inspired by heritage, but an evolving design language for Nanyang fashion — one that connects cultural memory with how we live, dress and express ourselves today.

Re-engineering the Mundane

The journey begins with the humble T-shirt. Early experiments re-engineered familiar everyday clothing with Mandarin collars, Chinese closures, and couture details like kimono sleeves—exploring how tradition and couture can feel casual, playful, and approachable.
Fashion as Cultural Storytelling

Grounded in archival research, stories of our forefathers, human values, architecture, and intangible heritage—from Kun Opera to falangcai porcelain—timeless cultural narratives across eras are reinterpreted into living fashion.
The Nanyang Qipao:

Across two decades, the qipao became a continuing field of experimentation. We reconsider the classic silhouette through lightweight fabrics, unexpected construction, and modern cuts engineered specifically for tropical comfort and ease of movement.
Peranakan Artistry as a New Design Language
娘惹艺术的当代设计转译
Rather than reproducing the Kebaya, Fuchsia Lane draws from the wider vocabulary of Peranakan artistry — embroidery, colours, lace, florals and decorative detail — translating them into new forms of contemporary silhouettes.
Cross-Cultural Collaboration & Craft Innovation

Working across borders, Fuchsia Lane collaborates with Korean hanbok embroiderers, Swatow artisans, and master makers. Techniques from Peranakan beading to batik and couture construction are reinterpreted through a contemporary Nanyang lens.
Mentorship & the Formation of a Design Language

Mentorship under Singapore fashion veteran Thomas Wee sharpened an understanding of luxury details that are not seen but felt, cut, construction and restraint, laying important foundations for the design language that Fuchsia Lane would continue to develop.

Through tailoring, batik, embroidery and cross-cultural influences, Fuchsia Lane asks what a distinctly contemporary Nanyang expression of menswear in a global context might look like.
